The northern most island of the Tuscan Arcipelago; Gorgona; has been mentioned in antique times and was a monks island; until 1771; when Peter Leopold I.; Grand Duke of Tuscany; purchased the island. In 1869; Gorgona became an agricultural penal colony and has its 150th anniversary as Italy`s last prison island; in 2019. Only landing place is the Cala dello Scalo. It is allowed to visit the island; but photographing and mobile phones are prohibited except one day a year; when the new Gorgona white wine of Frescobaldi is presented to the media.
