Morning in New England, 1873. Although born and trained in Europe, Hart strove to show scenes which conveyed a distinctly American quality. Raised in Albany, Hart specialized in landscapes of New York State but often chose to depict farm scenes with cattle. This painting communicates the simple harmony of the American countryside through the peaceful cattle and quiet town nestled in the distance. The prominence of the church steeple in the center of the work suggests the belief that God look favorably upon the American landscape. Hart's membership in the Hudson River School is evident in the earth-tone palette and panoramic viewpoint of the scene.
