Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the organ of Corti in the cochlear of the inner ear. The tectorial (upper) membrane (green) has been lifted. Rows of inner hairs (stereocilia, white) lie across top. These hairs receive amplified vibrations from the outer hair cells (not seen) and transmit the signal to auditory nerve fibres. This amplification enhances the sensitivity and dynamic range of hearing. Support cells (brown) and nerve fibres (pink) are also seen. Magnification: x1,300 when printed at 15cm wide.
