Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Reissner's membrane in the organ of Corti in the cochlear of the inner ear. This membrane separates the cochlear duct from the vestibular duct. In the organ of Corti vibrations from sound entering the ear are amplified and converted into neural signals that are transmitted to auditory nerve fibres. Magnification: x2,000 when printed at 15cm wide.
