At the centre of the bone shaft is the medullary cavity and a core of yellow bone marrow (red), which stores fat. The epiphyseal line (white) lies between the end of the bone (epiphysis) and the shaft (diaphysis). The spaces within the epiphysis contain red bone marrow, the site of blood cell production.
