Aerial photograph of the former position of the San Rafael Falls, until February 2020 the highest falls in Ecuador. The water used to fall down the bare smooth rock face at left, some 150 metres to the channel below. On 2nd February 2020 the Rio Coca river eroded beneath the hard rock cap and emerged from a new channel at the base of the falls. The sudden drop in height caused rapid erosion of the channel upstream, forming a growing gorge that moved upstream at up to 100 metres per day, destroying roads, oil pipelines, bridges and forest. Photographed on 19th August 2020.
