Aerial photograph of work to repair a broken pipeline in the rapidly-eroding gorge around the Coca River (Rio Coca) in eastern Ecuador. This dramatic erosion followed the collapse of the riverbed at the San Rafael Falls, some two kilometres downstream from this location. The bed of the falls collapsed on 2nd February 2020, dropping the river flow from 150-metre-high top of the falls to its previous bottom. This began severe regressive erosion of the river channel heading upstream from the falls, forming a steep gorge. The gorge eroded back up the stream bed at up to 100 metres per day, destroying oil pipelines, roads and forest. Photographed on 12th August 2020.
