Canadian Space Agency astronaut David Saint-Jacques with BioNutrients samples aboard the International Space Station (ISS). BioNutrients is a biology experiment using microorganisms to produce, on demand, nutrients that humans will need during long-duration space missions. Yeast cells have been engineered to produce two essential nutrients, including beta carotene. This turns the yeast cell's liquid environment from light yellow to the deep orange seen here. This is a step toward ensuring astronauts will have the nutrition they need for trips to Mars and beyond. The technology NASA is developing for future astronauts can also be used by people living in remote areas on Earth. Photographed on 10th June 2019.
