Anthony Steven Fauci (born 1940), American physician and immunologist. Fauci is best known for being the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). During the outbreak of the AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) epidemic in the early 1980s, Fauci researched the pathogenesis of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus-1) and tended to HIV patients. He also contributed to the development of effective therapies for once fatal inflammatory diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa and granulomatosis with polyangiitis. In January 2021, Fauci was appointed as chief medical advisor to US President Biden.
