Light micrograph of a section through human lung tissue showing tuberculosis (TB). This disease is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attacks the lungs but can also attack any part of the body, such as the kidney, spine and brain. Not everyone infected by TB bacteria becomes ill. As a result, two TB-related conditions exist: latent TB infection (LTBI) and TB disease. If not treated TB disease can be fatal.
