Map showing the distribution of the element thorium across the South Pole-Aitken basin, located on the farside of the Moon. Red areas depict places of high thorium abundance. Purple and grey areas show places of lower thorium abundance. Areas of high thorium abundance were hit by an impact on the farside of the Moon causing material to be ejected from the mantle. This material was then scattered on the lunar surface. This map will help scientists to locate areas where mantle material can be collected from in a future lunar sample return mission.
