Light micrograph of a section of human tissue of a young child showing paediatric neuroblastoma. This is a cancerous tumour that begins in nerve tissue of infants and very young children. The disease usually begins in the tissues of the renal gland found in the abdomen, but may also begin in nerve tissue in the neck, chest, or spinal cord. Neuroblastoma cancer cells can spread (metastasise) quickly to other areas of the body, such as, lymph nodes, liver, lungs, bones, central nervous system and bone marrow. Approximately, two-thirds of children diagnosed with neuroblastoma will have some metastatic disease. However, neuroblastoma is rare in children older than 10 years, although it does occur occasionally in adults.
