Light micrograph of a section of human skin infected by scabies. Scabies is a common itchy skin condition and anyone can get it. It is caused by a tiny burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. The intensity of itching occurs where the mite burrows. Scabies is contagious and can spread quickly through physical contact. The condition can be readily treated with skin medications which kill both the mites and their eggs. However, itching may continue several weeks after treatment.
