Self-portrait of Francesco Fontana (c. 1580-1656), Italian astronomer and lawyer published in his 1646 book Novae Celestium observationes. In the inscription around the portrait, Fontana identifies himself as the inventor of the telescope. Fontana made the earliest drawing of Mars using his own telescopic observations in 1636. He also was the first to observe the sky using a telescope with two convex lenses in the 1620s.
