For twelve twlilight months Sergeant David Sharp, 25 (above), of the Northumberland Fusiliers, endured solitary confinement. It began in a rat-ridden cellar of a Korean temple, 10ft x 5ft. It continued in the cellar of a Korean jail. Forbidden to sing or whistle, each dragging day of semi-darkness was punctuated only by interrogations and unending threats. Not once for a whole year did he speak to a fellow countryman face to face. Yet, as the last British prisoner to cross to freedom. he stepped briskly down the gangway of the troopship Dilwara at Southampton to give the answer: "When I was in solitary, I thought of home." November 5, 1953. (Photo by Daily Mirror).
