At a British port, the famous cruiser Shropshire, which took part in the bombardment of the Italian Red Sea ports, was handed over by the Royal Navy to the Royal Australian Navy as a gift from Britain to Australia, to replace H.M.A.A. Canberra, lost in action against the Japanese in the Solomons. A completer modern refit preceded the handling-over. Mr. Middleton, charge hand of the British fitters, gives the BBC a description of the work that has been done. With him in the engine-room is Lt. E. Heithersay, R.A.N., from Sydney, N.S.W. Recordings made at the time of the BBC visit were later broadcast in the BBC Overseas programmes "Calling Australia" and "Radio Newsreel". April 30, 1943. (Photo by BBC).
