Aerial view of Palembang on the Moesi River in south-east Sumatra. This important trading centre had a population of 63,000 before the war, including many Arabs and Chinese, and 1,600 Europeans. It is situated 48 miles inland from where the Moesi River flows into Banka Strait. The importance of Palembang as a transit centre for oil, rubber, spices, coffee, palm oil, etc., was enhanced by the fact that the Moesi River is navigable by seagoing vessels most of the year. March 31, 1950.
