Sulphur polypore (Laetiporus sulphureus). This bright bracket fungi stands out even in dark woodland. It can be found on a variety of dead and mature hardwood trees. When young it can be eaten and is said to taste like chicken, crab or lobster but there may be an allergic reaction and it should never be eaten raw. The taste is reflected in other names for the fungus; chicken-of-the-woods, lobster-of-the-woods, crab-of-the-woods and chicken polypore. As it ages the colour fades to beige or grey and it becomes tough and unpalatable. It can be found in Europe and North America. Photographed in Powys, Wales, UK.
