Wild cattle called Aurochs were a common and impressive sight in Europe's ancient woodlands. Being nearly 2 meters high at the shoulder, these animals could seriously trample crops, and accordingly in Britain, farmers hunted them to extinction by around 3500 BC. The hole in the animal's forehead was caused by a stone axe blade.
