Kassope was a typical small Greek city with a population of about 8 - 10, 000 during its heyday between 3rd - early 2nd c. BC. Kassope was one of about 70 Greek cities in Epiros, destroyed by the decree of the Roman Senate in 167 BC. 'Lesbian Masonry' appeared in the seventh century BC and is named from a passage in Aristotle's 'Nicomachean Ethics', "Like the leaden rule used by Lesbian builders." The origins of the Lesbian style have been placed in Aeolis, Boeotia, Attica, Iona though not Lesbos. An important feature of polygonal masonry is it's resistance to seismic shocks making structures built by this method virtually earthquake proof.
