SILVER-GILT TROPHY CUP IN FORM OF A HOT-AIR BALLON.

Silver; gilt. On flat circular foot the model of a hot air balloon with wicker basket and carrying rope.
The balloon envelope as cuppa with removable lid. Obverse inscription'Godesburg' engraved. Ca. 290g. Height 22.5cm.

Crescent & crown; standard 800; maker's mark Gabriel Hermeling (from 1861; Scheffler; Rhineland no.774; 775). Condition A.

Airship travel has and had found great appeal in Bonn and Bad Godesberg already shortly
after the first passenger flight of the Montgolfi鑢e in Versailles; which took place in
front of the eyes of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in the year 1783. Already a few months
later a hot air balloon took off in Bonn and in 1906 the "Niederrheinische Verein f黵
Luftschifffahrt; Sektion Bonn" (Lower-Rhenian Society for Airship Travel; section Bonn)
was founded.
