Netherlands / Indonesia: Jan Pieterszoon Coen (8 January 1587  21 September 1629), Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Oil on panel painting, c. 1750-1800. Jan Pieterszoon Coen was an officer of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) who held two terms as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Renowned for his administering skills, he was also a cruel and ruthless leader, remembered most for his quote: 'Despair not, spare your enemies not, for God is with us.' He was responsible for the Banda Massacre of 1621, and his soldiers committed numerous acts of destruction in eastern Indonesia, all for gaining a monopoly on the supply of nutmeg and mace. Even for his time, Coen's acts were deemed excessively violent by many.
