India: Varaha, the man-boar avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, with the earth goddess (Prithvi) hanging from his tusk. Found in the Gupta period (4th century CE to late 6th century CE) Varaha Temple, Eran, Madhya Pradesh (Photo by Henry Cousens, 1893). This scene shows the return of Varaha after he has successfully killed the oppressive demon Hiranyaksha, and rescued goddess earth Prithvi Mata or Bhudevi.
