Large hoverfly (Eristalis tenax), sometimes known as a drone fly. It is a member of the Syrphidae family of true flies. It is the most widely distributed syrphid species, being found in all regions except Antarctica. This species can be identified from other Eristalis sp. by the thick dark band across the face of the hoverfly. Photographed in Somerset UK, in September.
