Satellite image of cyclone Freddy in the Mozambique Channel on 8th March 2023. Freddy formed near Indonesia on 6th February and travelled across the Indian Ocean for 15 days, making its first landfall on Madagascar on 21st February. It moved across the island and made its second landfall in Mozambique on 24th February before moving back into the Mozambique Channel and making a third landfall in Mozambique on 11th March. It then moved inland to Malawi and eventually dissipating on the 15th February. This made Freddy the longest-lived tropical cyclone ever recorded. Freddy was classified as a very intense tropical cyclone. It caused flooding and extensive damage as well as over 420 fatalities. Image obtained by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the NOAA-20 satellite.
