Illustration of a CMP-sialic acid transporter protein. This protein transports Cytidine 5'-monophosphate (CMP) and sialic acid from the cell cytosol to the lumen of the Golgi apparatus where the sialic acid is then attached to glycoproteins and glycolipids. It is an antiporter protein and so at the same time also transports CMP from the Golgi lumen to the cell cytosol.
