Secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) foraging for insects in the dry Nossob riverbed of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park after the onset of the summer rains. This bird of prey inhabits grassland and open spaces of sub-Saharan Africa. Although an accomplished flyer it remains mostly terrestrial. It feeds on snakes, large insects, lizards and rats, stamping the larger prey to death with its large claws. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Southern Africa.
