Robert Galbraith Heath (1915-1999), US psychiatrist. Heath was a proponent of biological psychiatry, which believes that mental disorders have a physical cause and therefore are treatable by physical means. He is best known for his work on schizophrenia. His experiments in the 1950s on schizophrenic patients who had electrodes implanted into their brains for deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment were controversial at the time and are now considered unethical. He 1956 he claimed to have isolated a protein, named taraxein, from the blood of schizophrenic patients that would induce symptoms of the disease when injected into healthy subjects. Attempts to replicate this work have never succeeded. Heath also claimed to be able to cure homosexuality, which was listed as a mental disorder in the USA at the time, with DBS.
