Large solar prominence releasing a coronal mass ejection (CME). Prominences are dense clouds of plasma, or ionised gas, in the Sun's outer layer, the corona. CMEs are intense eruptions of radiation and hot plasma (ionised gas) from the surface of the Sun. Mass ejections such as this can cause a variety of effects if they are directed toward Earth, including powerful aurora displays and electrical blackouts. Captured on the 10th July 2022, from the Dark Sky Alqueva region, Portugal.
