Whipple's disease bacteria (Tropheryma whipplei, formerly called Tropheryma whippelii), computer illustration. Whipple's disease mainly affects the intestines, but it may also affect the heart, lungs, joints and brain. In the intestines it causes malabsorption of nutrients, leading to weight-loss and nutritional deficiencies. Other symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and fatigue. Treatment is with antibiotics.
