Molecular model of the nucleotide analogue drug remdesivir (red) disrupting the synthesis of RNA (ribonucleic acid) by the enzyme RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp, blue) from the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. RdRp catalyses the replication of a complementary RNA strand from an RNA template. SARS-CoV-2 causes a respiratory illness (Covid-19) that can develop into pneumonia and be fatal in some cases. RdRp is a promising target for the treatment of Covid-19.
