Mealworm, the larva of a yellow mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor) exhibiting 'wiggle and jump' defense when prodded by scientist in this laboratory demonstration. This defense is meant to startle and frighten a predator when it grasps the larva. A wide variety of other insect larvae are known to rely on similar defensive maneuvers when threatened by predators. Larvae are the second stage in the lives of insects that undergo complete metamorphosis. They hatch from eggs and precede the pupa and adult stages.
