Measuring the pH of a solution of sodium carbonate, a food additive and water softener. Solid sodium carbonate is added to water and stirred, quickly dissolving. The electronic probe then displays the pH, revealing the solution to be a reasonably strong alkali, with a pH over 11.2. One of its uses is as an acidity regulator in foods.
