Diesel engine. Animation of a four-stroke diesel engine. This machine uses controlled combustion of air and diesel to rotate a wheel (red). Air (green) enters the engine's cylinder forcing down the piston. The piston then rises and compresses the air, which also has the effect of heating the air. The fuel (pink) is then injected into the cylinder, where the heat ignites the fuel causing an explosion (combustion). This explosion pushes the piston down. This is the power stroke. The piston then returns to the top of the cylinder, pushing the exhaust gases (yellow) out of the engine. Diesel engines are more efficient than petrol engines.
