Light microscope differential interference contrast (DIC) footage of cyclosis, or cytoplasmic streaming, in a ciliate. Particles can be seen moving within the cytoplasm. Cyclosis is the mechanism by which general transport and solute movement takes place within cells. This two-way process is aided by the actin protein microfilaments of the cell's cytoskeleton. Ciliate protozoa are tiny single-celled organisms which are found in water. They feed on bacteria and decaying organic matter, and move by the rhythmic beating of hair-like cilia.
