Tomato stem. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the stem of a tomato plant (Lycopersicon lycopersicum). The surface layer is covered with two types of hairs, or trichomes. There are long unbranched hairs that help to protect the plant from attack by insects, and bulbous-tipped glandular trichomes that produce oil that deter insects.
