Global Convective Available Potential Energy model. Animation showing 10 day forecast of variations in global Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) from 3rd May 2016. CAPE is a measure of the energy of rising air masses. Severe weather, such as thunderstorms, form as a result of convection - when heat or moisture rise in the atmosphere. This imagery shows the predicted CAPE from the NOAA Global Forecast System weather model, which provides 10 day forecasts. This data is useful for predicting severe weather, including thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes and even cyclones. Topical areas, due to the high temperatures and moisture of the surface air masses, tend to have the highest CAPE values.
