Paramecium bursaria, light microscopy. This ciliate protozoan has a symbiotic relationship with the green alga Zoochlorella. The algae (green spheres) live in the Paramecium's cytoplasm and photosynthesise, providing it with sugars and oxygen, while the Paramecium provides the algae with transport and protection. Paramecium bursaria has a wide oral groove, two contractile vacuoles, and a micronucleus as well as a macronucleus. This species is often used in biology classrooms both as an example of a protozoan and as an example of symbiosis. Filmed with differential interference contrast illumination.
