Particle model of dust and gas distribution following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991. Immediately following the eruption, large amounts of sulphur dioxide and dust spread through the Earth磗 atmosphere. This led to global cooling of some 0.5 degrees Celsius on average in 1991. The colours in this animation reflect the atmospheric height of the particles: red is high and blue is closer to the surface. The data span three months, from 15th June 1991 to 13th September 1991. The distribution of dust clearly shows the prevailing wind systems on Earth.
