Animation of the expanding universe, or the metric expansion of space, where the distance between distant objects in the universe increases over time. This is not because the objects are moving away from each other in the manner of two cars driving away from each other although they may be doing this as well, it is because the fabric of spacetime itself is expanding, analogous to the road stretching between the cars.
