Creation of a Higgs boson. At the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator at CERN, protons pink are smashed into each other at extremely high energies. Each proton comprises three quarks, two up and one down, each of a different colour charge red, green and blue, and bound together by gluons. There are several interactions that could produce a Higgs boson, such as a gluon_gluon collision or a W or Z boson combination. Recent data from 2011 have indicated that the Higgs boson may have a mass between 124_126 GeV, but it has not yet been detected. Detection of the Higgs boson would be an important confirmation of the Standard Model of particle physics.
