Black hole accretion. Animation of accretion of gas from a star to a black hole, in an X_ray binary system. The start of the animation shows the star at right and the black hole with jets at left, with gas being drawn from the star into the black hole磗 accretion disc. The animation follows material that formed an X_ray 磆ot spot?in the accretion disc. The hot spot rotates rapidly and the X_ray emissions increase in frequency, as it gets closer to the black hole. Finally, the material is ejected as superfast 碽ullets?impacting the jets. This animation is based on observations of the H1743_322 system, located 28,000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Scorpius. The observations were made on 3 June 2009 with NASA磗 Rossi X_ray Timing Explorer RXTE satellite and the National Science Foundation磗 NSF Very Long Baseline Array VLBA radio telescope.
