Fire salamanders Salamandra salamandra and an earthworm, close_up. Fire salamanders are found in forested and hilly areas across continental Europe, living in leaf litter. Like other amphibians, they need streams or ponds in which to lay eggs. They are largely nocturnal, hunting at night for worms, insects and slugs. Their striking yellow and black colouration warns potential predators that they are highly toxic.
