Red fox cubs playfighting on grass. The red fox Vulpes vulpes breeds in early spring, typically giving birth to four to six cubs or kits after a seven_ to eight_week gestation. Cubs are born with grey fur, the familiar rust_coloured coat develops gradually from around three weeks. These cubs have some patches of red fur amongst the grey. The red fox is a highly adaptable omnivore found throughout the northern hemisphere, and it has been introduced to Australia. In its native habitat it feeds on rodents, birds and large insects, as well as fruit and other plant material. It is often found even in the largest cities, where it scavenges on leftovers as well as hunting for food. Filmed in Normandy, France.
