Animation of a Higgs boson event in the Compact Muon Solenoid CMS detector in the Large Hadron Collider LHC at CERN. This animation shows a ZZ event 8 TeV data, seen in 2011, in which a Higgs boson is produced, then rapidly decays to two Z bosons, one of which decays to two muons, and the other to two electrons shown by the thick yellow spikes and the thin grey lines. Detection of the muons and electrons with masses consistent with the Z and Higgs bosons provides strong evidence that a Higgs was indeed produced. On 4th July 2012, researchers at the LHC announced that they had discovered a new particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson.
