Pennsylvania black carpenter ant Camponotus pennsylvanicus sprays a noxious chemical, intended to deter predators, from gland near end of its abdomen leaving white blotches on indicator paper, as its legs are pinched by scientist in laboratory demo. This species also has a chemical spraying gland near it mandibles. Many insects and other arthropods use a variety of chemical defences to ward off predators.
