Euplotes swimming about as they search for bacteria to eat. Euplotes have clumps of fused cilia called cirri which are used for swimming and 磜alking? and which give them a jittery or herky_jerky movement. The cirri are also used to create currents in the water, drawing in bacteria. This oval_shaped ciliate protozoan measures about 150 microns across and is common in pond water. Recorded under Nomarski DIC illumination.
