Two pairs of Blepharisma, ciliated protozoans measuring about 300 microns in length, undergoing conjugation as they swim about. This is a process during which two cells join along the side to exchange genetic material. Conjugation enables protozoa to live longer and better adapt to their environment. Recorded under Nomarski DIC illumination.
