Silver orb weaver spider (Argiope sp.) positioning itself near center of its web as it prepares to dine on fly it has just caught. The white, zig-zag patterns near the center of the web are the stabilimentum, the purpose of which is not definitely known. The bodies of these spiders can reach more than 25 mm across and can be found throughout much of the southeastern U.S. and elsewhere.
