Silver orb weaver spider (Argiope sp.) uses its front legs to tense its web in search of prey. Orb weaver spiders have poor vision and must rely on vibrations felt through the silk strands of their webs to detect prey. The white, zig-zag patterns in portions of the web are the stabilimentum, the purpose of which is not definitely known. The bodies of these spiders can reach more than 25 mm across and can be found throughout much of the southeastern U.S. and elsewhere.
